The Approach

I work with students one-on-one for 45-60 minutes, two to four times per week.  The more sessions per week, the more progress we can make.

  • Lessons are created so that your child achieves 90-95% accuracy each time, thus building confidence and mastery.

  • Pacing is established based on each student's abilities and needs. There is no such thing as too fast or too slow.

  • Lessons are multi-sensory, using kinesthetic, auditory, and visual learning styles.

  • Students become empowered readers and writers in a very safe environment.

  • Lessons move fast, changing activities frequently so as to keep the student engaged.

  • Mistakes are welcome learning opportunities.

  • No homework!

Why Orton-Gillingham?

These days, most of what is taught about the English language is abstract and based on memorization.  Somehow, students are supposed to just know how syllables are divided and what a "schwa" is.  The O.G. approach breaks our language down into a basic, reliable, and understandable system for the student.  It is an evidence-based approach stemming from endless research and application.

What is Structured Word Inquiry?

Ever wonder how certain words are built or why they are spelled in a seemingly unusual way? By using structured word inquiry (SWI) and our newly honed phonological skills, we learn to become word scientists and to investigate how words are built. We discover their bases, and then we can see how they morph and change into other words using affixes. We investigate their meaning, their history, and their relatives, and we begin to gain a higher level of our language and its rich history.
